Commitment to the spirit

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness."(NIV) Romans 12:1-2, Romans 6:13

The human nature dictates that we naturally gravitate towards the desires of the flesh. The human nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. The Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the human nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your personal intentions (Gal. 5:16 – 17). Is there a solution? Yes, let us commit to being slaves to the Spirit so that we can produce the works of righteousness (Gal. 5:18, 22 – 23). But is it that easy? Certainly not! As Christians, we can agree with Paul that we are constantly struggling with sin: “I do not understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it, instead, I do what I hate” (Rom. 7:16). The gap that exists between what we know to be right and yet refusing to do what is right is aggravated by sin.

Susanna Wesley was the mother of Charles Wesley, the hymnist and John Wesley, the preacher. One day, John went to the mother and asked for the definition of sin. The mother gave perhaps the profoundest definition of sin; “if anything weakens your reasoning, impairs the tenets of your conscience, obscures your sense of god or takes away your relish for spiritual things. In short, if anything increases the authority and the power of the flesh over the spirit that to you becomes sin however good is it in itself.”

Sin is the bane of our existence! Slowly but surely it weakens our reasoning, impairs the tenets of our conscience, obscures our sense of God and eventually takes away our delight for what is spiritual. Like the proverbial frog, we would resist a hot water when we first encounter it but when it is presented as a lukewarm water, we stay in it, oblivious to the danger. Sooner than imaginable, we get boiled to the point of destruction. Is there hope? Yes, there is. More than ever we need a principle of jealous Godly fear within. A sensibility of sin and the pain to feel it is near. We must strive to choose to do what is right for the glory of God.

Commitment by challenge

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

"’Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us? "(NIV) Mathew 19:27

Humanity in the quest to achieve happiness and freedom from uncomfortable life situations has tried to use all physical means to achieve pleasure. Man will always pursue what it takes to attain happiness on earth. Mankind has been trying to bypass God to achieve our own desires.

God demands commitment from man to prove our loyalty to him because he created us for himself. Our greatest satisfaction can only come from a deep relationship with God. We are created to crave for our Creator, and anything less will not satisfy. Commitment demands wholesome and unconditional surrender of our whole being to the greatest King of the Universe, God. Commitment to God is more than verbal confession of our faith, it demands action. All the great people of God in history showed commitment to God by action. Abraham was one such example of people who demonstrated commitment to God.

Apostle Peter challenged Christ concerning what the Apostles benefits will be for committing themselves to him. The Apostles left everything to follow Christ. What are you willing to sacrifice to show your commitment to Christ? Can you challenge God on anything because you have committed something to him?

Don’t be deceived by the world that you can achieve your purpose in life by neglecting God or relegating him to the background. Commit your life to God in a special way than before and have the basis to challenge Christ for what you deserve. Challenge God today by your commitment.

My people revere me not!

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the Lord has spoken: I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. The ox knows its manager, the donkey his owner’s manager, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand. Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evil doers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him.” (NIV) Isaiah 1:2-4

In the bible, there are a number of amazing things God did for the nation He considered His own (Israel). For example, He brought them from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 6:6) and even fed them with manna in the desert (Exodus 16). Yet Israel forgot all that God did for them and rebelled against Him. The scripture reading clearly reveals God’s bitterness and anger after Israel rebelled against Him. Indeed, it is sad that even animals such as ox and donkeys know and follow their master’s direction but we humans often forsake our Lord and fail to follow His directions.

Once upon a time, when man goes against God’s word, he or she is not given a chance to ask for forgiveness but immediately stroke dead. As time went on, this was changed so that man can seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Because of this leniency, mankind has taken God for granted and perpetrating all forms of vices both in the dark and in broad day light. It is unfortunate that Christians have joined in disrespecting our God.

Once, I was discussing with a friend about the sins we commit as Christians in secret places. I told him if our secret sins are written boldly on our foreheads and only people looking at us can see, we will be amazed at what we will be seeing on fellow Christians’ foreheads. I will be no exception with so many sins that my small forehead will not be able to accommodate. In as much as this scenario is funny, it would be so embarrassing if it happens.

We are imperfect beings and we are prone to sin but must we live in sin as a sign of disrespect to our maker? Certainly not! We must aim at perfection just like Christ. Let us thrive to live sin free lives as a sign of reverence to our maker. Our God is severe in His punishment of those who disrespect Him through sinning and He is also rewarding in those who revere Him.

Dear reader, if you are not yet a Christian, why not consider to give your life to Christ now and thrive to be perfect as He is. It is only in Him that we can revere the Creator. The time to seek and know Him is now. Contact the This email address is being protected from spambots. The blessing of trials

Written by Myles MacMillan.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV) James 1:2-5

Trials are probably one of the most difficult blessings to appreciate because they aren't much fun when we are facing them. We have an easier time understanding physical trials than spiritual trials. To most of us it makes sense that if you want to become stronger you must work your muscles, the more they are tested the stronger they become and it really isn't any different when it comes to our spiritual strength.

In verse 2 of the section above James says that we should be happy to face trials. How on earth can we be happy about that? We should be happy because we know we will become stronger if we endure the trial faithfully. God puts trials in our life to test our faith. Verse 3 says that the reason He does this is to produce perseverance in us. If we continue to persevere then verse 4 says that our faith will be “mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Thanks be to God for building our faith in Him!

When we face a hard test in our life it is a time that we need to draw near to God for strength because it is also a time that the enemy will tempt us to walk away from God. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that right after talking about trials; James brings up praying for wisdom. When we are facing trials we must ask God for wisdom to understand His word so we know the correct decisions to make. If we sincerely want to follow His will, He will grant us wisdom to make the right choice and persevere through the trial we are facing.

The blessing of trials doesn't stop at growing our faith here in this life either. Verse 12 says “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” We are doubly blessed by trials because they prepare us for our walk with God today and our eternity with Him tomorrow!

I have heard of you before but now I see you

Written by Mantebeah Elizabeth Matilda Abena.

"I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. I take back everything I said and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance”(NLT) Job 42: 5-6

Inspired by the Song “God is not dead” by Newboys, I have a better understanding of Job’s statement in Job 42. After making all the arguments about his blameless state and how God must have been angry with him to have made him go through his painful life challenges, he finally gets God to respond with a few questions for him (Job) to answer as well. As expected by God, Job couldn’t answer any of the questions.

This brings us to some of the things we do as Christians. Whenever we find ourselves in situations that transcend our understanding and abilities, we begin to question the ways of God in our lives. I am guilty of this sin and I believe you too are trying to see yourself in this sad truth. There have been times when I ask God; “why me?” and the question I usually get in return is; “if not you, who else do you want to experience this?” After enduring some of these challenges, I have come to realize that these are precious moments of training from God. A training that has help me to increase in faith and stay strong in the Lord.

Many authors have written that when one ask for strength from God, He gives you trials and sees how you will stand in those perilous times. It is the same with Faith- you get challenges that require more trust in something that is humanly hopeless (e.g. not having a job for almost 5 years of graduating from school and having to feed your family). For Love, one may be faced with the challenge of accepting and being accepted by people who are unreasonable and selfish. When we find ourselves in any of these conditions, however, we begin to think that our God is either dead or doesn’t just care about us and what happens to us. Little do we know that He is silently answering the very same requests we might have placed before Him but which we expect answers in our own specific ways. In Jeremiah 29:11, God says He has a plan for our lives and it is to prosper us and not harm us. This implies that no matter our current situation (hard times and silent hours from God), God is with us in it, whether we see His hand or not, we need to know and believe His presence in everything we do.

Back to our story of Job, it was obvious that when God begun to question Job on how things were happening in the world, Job understood that God was indeed with him in his situation. God was aware of Job’s predicament but He was silent because He had a better life for Job, far better than the one he had which God allow the devil to take away from him. Similarly, we should see everything that happens in our lives (good or bad) as an opportunity for God to change our current situation and give us His best gift (James 1: 17- source of every good gift).
