Please don't let us die tonight

And just as each person is destined to DIE once, after that comes judgment.(NIV) Hebrews 9:27

So a commander of an army was going for war with his men. He asked his fellow soldier to commit themselves into God’s hands and below was the prayer: DEAR LORD, WHATEVER DUTY MAY GUIDE OUR LIVES TODAY, PLEASE DON’T LET US DIE TONIGHT BUT IF WE DIE BEFORE WE WAKE, WE ACCEPT OUR FATE.

As I pondered over this prayer, the reality of the Christian life dawned on me. The Christian journey is a warfare (Ephesians 6:12) and we Christians are the Soldiers. We are fortunate to have a high commander as Jesus, but the scripture admonishes us that we are destined to die once. We all want to go to heaven yet we don’t want to die. I don’t know when I will die and the same applies to you.

It is therefore very important that we avoid useless deaths. As Christians, we must know that death is just another opportunity to see God. The soldier knew what he was in for. He was in a battle and although he would want to live for another fight, he will also accept the reality of a possible hero’s’ death: death on the war front.

This should be our attitude as Christians. We must not be afraid of death. In as much as we want to live to witness for Christ and help Him expand His kingdom on earth, we must also not be ignorant of the fact that it is appointed unto man to die once.

A good Christian is one that embraces this truth and prepares to die a hero’s death like the soldier above. Our work on earth is to please God and when all is said and done, we must leave to where we came from (the creator). He can call us anytime, so let us be prepared as soldiers to die anytime. Not just any death that leads to eternal destruction but a HERO’S death for Christ.
