Managing Expectations (IV)

Written by Alhassan Mohammed Sandargo.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;" (NIV) Proverbs 3:5

Expert inputs can be valuable, but when treated as absolute truth, they can lead to misplaced expectations. Human knowledge, no matter how advanced, remains imperfect—only God’s word is flawless.

Lot relied on what seemed like a wise choice. Given the opportunity, he selected the best-looking land, assuming prosperity. Yet, his decision led him near Sodom, a city doomed for destruction (Genesis 13:10-13). Likewise, the king’s officer, his right-hand man in Samaria scoffed at God’s promise of abundance, claiming it was impossible. But when the prophecy was fulfilled, he saw it—but never tasted it (2 Kings 7:1-2, 17). Human reasoning failed, but God's word stood firm.

In life, we may rely on the best predictions, financial forecasts, or medical advice. While these have their crucial place, none can guarantee certainty. One vital expectation that remains unfailing is the return of the Lord Christ. Unlike earthly matters, this is not a probability—it is a divine certainty. “For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven… and the dead in Christ shall rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). The question is not if it will happen, but whether we are ready.

As we conclude this series, let us place our greatest expectation in the Lord. His word never fails, His promises never falter, and His return is sure. Are you prepared to meet Him? Will that be your most joyous expectation? .
