With Christ in the boat

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

"He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to His disciples, “why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”. (NLT) Mark 4:39-40

Bible reading: Mark 4:35-40

From Mark 4:35, we are told by the good book that Christ and His disciples were at one side of the river and they had to leave the crowd behind and cross to the other side of the river. Christ, the all-knowing God must have known that there would be a fierce storm on the way but He did not stop them from making the journey. Why did Christ make them embark on such a dangerous journey? The answer is obvious: He has the ability to do anything and wanted the disciples to recognize that fact and also strengthen their faith in Him.

Life has always been a struggle. Right from the day of conception up until man is born and die, life is a bunch of challenges. No matter the challenge, with Christ in the boat, we are not promised that there would be no storm but we are promised that the storm will be calmed. With Christ, life’s challenges are not eliminated rather we are given the strength to surmount them all. All we need to do is to learn to call on Him all the time especially when the challenges seem too great to bear just like the disciples did by waking Him up to calm the storm. Like the disciples, in the midst of the storm (challenges), we fret and forget who we have in our boat of life. We become so afraid, we lose faith.

Today, He encourages us not to be afraid and to put our faith in Him wholeheartedly for He alone can calm life’s storm. All He seeks today is for you to acknowledge that He is Lord and able to do all things. Be assured that at the right time and for your own good, He will stretch His arm to calm that storm in your life. Remember, He makes all things beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

May the understanding of the Lord be with us so our faith in Him will be firmly rooted.
