Winning Our Spiritual Warfare
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (NIV) 1 Peter 5:8
As Christians, we are in a perpetual battle—a spiritual warfare that does not cease until the end of time. This war isn't fought with physical weapons but with spiritual strength and divine armour. In this battle, Jesus Christ is our Commander-in-Chief. He is the ultimate leader who guides us and equips us to face the enemy. His authority is supreme, and if we remain in Him, victory is assured.
The elders, pastors, and spiritual leaders in the church serve as sectoral commanders. They are responsible for guiding, teaching, and leading us in specific areas of life and ministry. Like soldiers, we are to submit to their wisdom and direction, knowing they are under the authority of Christ. Their role is to ensure that each believer is properly equipped and aligned with God's strategies in this warfare.
But how well do we know our opponent? The Bible reveals that Satan is our adversary. He prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). He uses lies, deception, and temptation to lure us away from God's truth. Understanding his tactics is critical for victory. The more we know our opponent’s schemes, the better we can resist and stand firm.
However, we must also understand our strengths and weaknesses. Our greatest strength lies in our relationship with Christ. When we are rooted in His Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and connected with the body of believers, we are strong. But we are vulnerable when we rely on our strength, neglect prayer, or isolate ourselves from the church. Awareness of these weaknesses helps us guard against spiritual failure.
God has provided us with the accoutrements necessary for this spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6 describes the armour of God—truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer. These are not optional; they are essential for survival and victory. Without this armour, we are exposed and unprotected.
Surviving and winning in spiritual warfare requires strategic spiritual disciplines. Prayer, fasting, studying God's Word, fellowship with other believers, and living a life of obedience are our spiritual strategies. These practices keep us aligned with God’s will and fortified against the enemy's attacks. We are also called to fight together, not in isolation. Unity with other believers strengthens our resolve and fortifies our ranks. What happens when we face casualties in this war? Sometimes, we may stumble, sin, or grow weary. Casualties are a reality, but the beauty of the gospel is that grace abounds. Jesus offers healing and restoration. Through repentance and confession, we are picked up, dusted off, and set back on our feet.
There are moments when we become drained on the battlefield, exhausted from the relentless attacks. In these times, we must find our rest and renewal in Jesus. He said, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). In Him, we find the strength to continue and the grace to persevere.
In the end, with Jesus as our Commander-in-Chief, victory is certain. The battle is fierce, but the war has already been won through Christ’s death and resurrection. If we remain in Him, fully armoured and obedient, we will overcome.
