The valid worry: Investing in Christ

Written by Mantebeah Elizabeth Matilda Abena.

"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."(NIV) Matthew 6:33

As dearly beloved Children of God, we have been commanded not to worry about anything. This is clear in Philippians 4: 6 “Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Life is full of challenges and as long as we are in this corruptible body, we are not immune to these daily sufferings and issues.

The confidence we have in Christ is the ability to go to God with all our worries, casting our burdens unto him for He cares (Psalm 55:22, 1 Peter 5:7). This is the foundation of our hope. It is what sustains us as believers.

As Matthew 6: 25-34 encourages us, we must not worry about life issues, instead, we have to give attention to what I call the “valid worry” – i.e. to seek God’s kingdom. This worry is not about being remorseful and thinking about what we don’t have in this world or the worldly achievements we desire. Rather it allows us to invest time in the things of God. Philippians 4:8 says “and now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise”.

We need to learn the secret of contentment (Philippians 4:11). It is only through this ability to be content in all situations can we learn to let go and allow God to take control. By so doing we don’t waste any time worrying about what to eat or drink, wear or what we have not etc. Rather we get to invest our time in Christ by setting our “sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honour at God’s right hand (Colossians 3:1)”. Our thoughts ought to be “about the things of heaven, not the things of earth (Colossians 3:2)”.

As dearly beloved, we have no right to worry our heads over anything in this world as this world and its desires are fading away (I John 2:17), but we have a genuine command to make every effort to ensure that our calling by God is sure (2 Pet 1:10). That is what we ought to constantly think of. It is the only valid worry we have because an investment in Christ is a sure guarantee for salvation in time to come. It calls for a strategic approach. Be sure you are found seeking God diligently during His second coming. God bless you.
