Fasting along prayer
"Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”(NIV) Hebrews 7:25
Regardless of our material circumstances, whether we have an abundance of food or very little, prayer and fasting remain essential practices in our spiritual journey. In times of plenty, we cultivate gratitude and humility, recognizing God as our ultimate provider. In times of scarcity, fasting deepens our dependence on God's provision and strengthens our connection with Him.
In the journey of faith, fasting and prayer stand as intertwined disciplines, each amplifying the efficacy of the other and unlocking profound spiritual benefits. Fasting serves as a catalyst for prayer, sharpening our focus and intensifying our hunger for God's presence. By temporarily abstaining from food or other distractions, we create space for spiritual reflection and intimacy with God. In fasting, we deny the cravings of the flesh to nourish the hunger of the soul, drawing closer to God in prayer and meditation.
When we engage in fasting and prayer, we stand to benefit in profound ways even physically. Fasting promotes detoxification, improved health, and increased discipline. It cultivates humility, strengthens faith, and deepens our dependence on God. Through fasting and prayer, we gain clarity of mind, sensitivity to God’s still small voice, and renewed passion for the things of God.
However, failing to make time to fast deprives us of these invaluable spiritual benefits and even health benefits. Without the discipline of fasting, we may find ourselves susceptible to spiritual lethargy, complacency, and disconnection from God's presence. We miss out on the opportunity to experience the fullness of intimacy with God and the transformative power of His Spirit working within us. While fasting may not always be obligatory, it often proves indispensable and can serve as a crucial catalyst for change, as emphasized by the Lord Jesus who taught that certain challenges necessitate both prayer and fasting for resolution with God (Matthew 17:21).
Therefore, let us embrace fasting and prayer as essential disciplines. As we draw near to God in fasting and prayer, may we encounter His presence in new and powerful ways, experiencing the abundant blessings He has in store for those who seek Him wholeheartedly. Amen
