Be puzzled by the works of God
"Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite." (NIV) Psalm 147:5
Some time ago, I had a message from a friend which reads, “it rained fishes in Thailand”. I then replied, “They are blessed”. Few minutes after that, the same message was posted on a group chat, but this time it was followed up with a statement; “Let those who do not believe in the existence of God explain to us”. This drew the group participants' attention to providing possible explanations of such an occurrence. Some individuals replied by postings web pages where scientists and meteorologists have attempted to explain the process leading to such occurrence. I followed the discussion on the group page carefully without saying a word. People made convincing points and I must confess that I was very much educated.
Throughout the discussion, I was asking myself this question: “WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IN THE LIFE OF A CHRISTIAN?” Scientists have explained many similar occurrences such as the earthquake, the beginning of the universe and the Bermuda Triangle. They have provided convincing explanations to these happenings such that these occurrences seem very ORDINARY to us when they occur. Today, Christians are consumed by these explanations to an extent that we fail to acknowledge the awesomeness of God. Most often than not, we fail to acknowledge God for His goodness and greatness: we do not feel amazed by what God has done for us. Why? Do we think that going to sleep at night and waking up in the morning is ordinary? Is it “normal”? Leaving home to work or school and back seem “normal” to many of us. We get to eat every day and this is also “normal”. O, how carnal can we be?
As Christians, God requires nothing from us other than praises, so it is written in Luke 19:40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Scientists do lots of research to come up with the explanations they give and that must be commended. But I want to agree more with Dr. Mensah Otabil, a Ghanaian theologian and a motivational speaker, when he once said these findings must lead you to FAITH and DEVOTION in God. I was moved by a submission a brother made on the group chat page that says “Science can give the logical explanation but fail to understand that all these things are not by accident but there is a mighty hand CAREFULLY controlling affairs”.
Brethren, let us be puzzled by the works of the Lord for indeed He exists and He is the LORD. God bless us.
