Selah!
From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people! Selah. (NIV) Psalm 3:8
The power of God’s word cannot be overstated, as scripture is filled with constant reminders to that effect. By His word, we learn that indeed, He made all things (Hebrews 11:3), He is the center of all things (Colossians 1:17), and surely, He is in control of our every way (Matthew 6:34). The Lord Jesus pressed home this eternal truth when he stated that, one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).
Now, in scripture, the use of the word selah or sela, which means rock (2Kings 14:7, Isaiah 16:1) in Hebrew must probably give us another guaranteeing reason to pause for a moment. The psalmist infused selah some 73times in his writings and each selah has almost always been preceded by striking, instructive and assuring words, that God is in control.
Through His word and sometimes too by the very encounters in life, God both reveals to or hides enough things from us (Deuteronomy 29:29, Acts 1:7) so we may appreciate that he is in control. Thus, whatever happens in our lives, and wherever the wind of life blows (John 3:8a), God is aware of them all. In our abundance, He is in control, likewise in our drought years. It is God who directs our path (Proverbs 19:6).
The prophet Habakkuk (3:3,9,13) was not reluctant either, in employing selah in his writing, in confirming the words that, God is in control whatsoever; in all spheres of life and realm of nature.
Today must be seen as a gift from God, more so, with the confidence that our heavenly Father is in control. We can thus, take a pause every now and then (like the use of selah by the psalmist in his writings), to muse over the awesomeness of Him who cares and is in control of all things.
Stay blessed, SELAH!
