If the foundations be destroyed

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

"The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?"(NLT) Psalm 11:3

We live in perilous times, occasioned by the trivialization of the dire consequences of sin. Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, sin has reigned supreme in the heart of men.

“The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil” (NLT) Genesis 6:5.

God chose the nation Israel as his own, not because of their military might or economic prospects but because Jehovah God is a covenant-keeping God and it was his pleasure to keep the oath he swore to their ancestors (Deuteronomy 7:7-8). Yet Israel persisted in her evil ways, from the time of Moses to the judges, to the kings and prophets, Israel lived with reckless impunity. The laws of God were treated with contempt. The Israelites became stiff-necked, and everybody did as he thought pleasing in his eyes (Judges 17:6; 21:25). The foundation of Israel was destroyed and for 70 years, they pined away in slavery and subjugation in Babylon (Jeremiah 21:1-14).

The lesson is very clear: Any individual, any family, any church, any nation that treats the laws of God that border on morality and doctrines with contempt may come to a sudden ruin (if there is no change of heart) because the ties with their Creator have severed (2 John 9). Similarly, those of us who claim to follow Christ yet reject his body, which is his church (Ephesians 1:22-23) ought to re-examine our decisions and actions. I wonder how one can accept Christ outside of his body; it is counter-intuitive.

What should we do then? Let us go back to the narrow path of righteousness.

This is what the Lord says:

“Stop at the crossroads and look around.

Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it.

Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.

But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!" (NLT) Jeremiah 6:16
