Avoid worldly counsel

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord and on His law he meditates day and night.” (NIV) Psalm 1:1-2

Total commitment to God’s kingdom within a sinful world is a difficult but achievable task. Our God is faithful, so He gives us all it takes to commit solely to Him as we live in this sinful world. All we need to commit totally to His kingdom lies in His word, thus, the bible. There are some things we need to avoid so that the task of totally committing to God’s kingdom can be less difficult.

We are to avoid following wicked counsel. The wicked counsel here is wrong advice from anyone or even from within yourself (worldly counsel). If we avoid wicked counsel, then we can also avoid standing with sinners then ultimately sitting with mockers. We live in a sinful world and we are one way or the other, tempted to be part of what the world does most of the time. However, the first step to staying off what the world does is to avoid counsel from the world. Nothing good comes from this world so accepting any form of counsel from this world automatically brings doom.

Sometimes, the world’s counsel looks or sounds so good to be a lie. That is why we need to equip ourselves with God’s word. In Matthew 4, we read about the temptation of Christ by the devil. How the devil offered so many goodies to Christ, but Christ used the word of God to defeat him. We need to delight in God’s word by learning, committing to memory and practicing God’s word. This is the sure way to avoid worldly counsel any day and then we will not worry about standing with sinners and sitting with mockers. God bless you.
