The evil of unforgiveness

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice” (KJV)  Ephesians 4:31

Humanity was created to be a social being by God. That is why God said, it is not good for man to live alone, I will create a companion for him (Genesis 2:18). Everybody needs somebody in life to be happy and move on in life. Wherever a group of people meet, there may be a possible misunderstanding or even wrath. It may be that you are the cause of the wrath or the receiver of the obnoxious event. How are we suppose to respond if we are provoked by someone?

Forgiveness is a sign of maturity and a good virtue for success in all aspects of life. The cost of unforgiveness is so great compared to forgiving others. People have lost their jobs due to vengeance on their co-workers, clients and managers when they were offended. Married couples have divorced and families disintegrated because they were not ready to forgive one another. Sports personalities have lost their crowns and also sacked from their teams because of responses when they were provoked. Businesses have collapsed when problems arise and one points to the other and engage in blame games rather than accepting mistakes and forgiving themselves. Churches have collapsed because leaders were not ready to forgive their members or members were not ready to accept the cost of forgiving their leaders. The list can go on.

One of the greatest dangers of unforgiveness is that you only know it and no one else. Until you decide to let it out or let it go, no one can help. It strangles the best things within us and crucifies the higher duties we could have done to help ourselves and others. Harbouring the wrong done by others breaks the heart to pieces, wrecks one’s health. It crushes friendships.

The one who forgives enjoys more than the one who receives forgiveness. Forgive and be happy. God does not forgive the unforgiving. Unforgiveness is a sin, a disease and a social disorder. Unforgiveness is “Like a prison-wall, it isolates us from humanity and from God, giving to life is loneliness”. Frank L. Cox

God help us to forgive those who trespass against us so that we will also experience divine forgiveness from you. Amen
