Overcoming Anger Made Easy

Written by Philip Addo Bempong.

26“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold… 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgives you. (NIV). Ephesians 4:31-32

As humans, we can get angry but when we do, the Bible admonishes us not to sin (Eph. 4:26-27). This means not all anger may lead to sinful acts except uncontrolled ones. Uncontrolled anger could have bad effects on us and may blind us from seeing opportunities to express Christ's love to people around us.

There are about 14 scripture references that warn us of the dangers of anger: Psalms 37:8; Eccl. 7:9; Prov. 15:17; 17:1; 21:19; 15:18; 25:28; 22:24-25; 16:32; 10:12; Col. 3:8; Jam. 1:19-20; Eph. 4:31-32). Studying these scriptures carefully and using the following four biblical suggestions can help us keep anger in check.

  • Ask for God's help in putting away angry thoughts and deeds. We are encouraged to seek God's help because He cares for us (1 Pet. 5:7).
  • Forgive the person who caused the anger (Eph. 4:32). We need to keep praying for the strength to forgive easily just as Christ does for us.
  • Learn to give thanks for all things, whether good or bad. Remember, God will work all things out for our good (1 Thess. 5:18; Rom. 8:28).
  • Concentrate and pray about the need to love one another as God loves us (Phil. 4:8; 1 John 4:7-10).

If you constantly repeat the above suggestions as needed, it will make you a lover of righteousness, and a person of peace and free from the sin that may come out of anger.
