Responsible parenting

"Train up a child in the way he should go, & when he is old he will not depart from it.” (KJV) Proverbs 22:6

The wise King Solomon said, “Train up a child in the way he should go, & when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Prov. 22:6). Perhaps no truer statement was ever made than this one concerning the proper love & care associated with parenting. Many of our young people are not getting the proper training from their parents. The Lord entrusted our children to us & He has high expectations that our responsibilities be carried out accordingly. Unfortunately, many parents are failing or have failed in this important area. Children are getting into trouble at a younger & younger age. There is no respect for authority in all areas. This is very alarming to me as it should be to others too.

The story is told about a man who was visiting a friend of high intelligence. This man wanted to talk to his buddy about training children. He told him that children are to have free rein to think & to act. This way they can learn at this early stage to make their own decisions. He believed that any other way would not give the children the opportunity to reach their full potential. His friend didn’t make any comments other than to ask his visitor to please follow him. The visitor did so & they went to see his buddy’s beautiful, thriving vegetable garden. As they both approached the garden, his visitor said that this is just a field taken over by grass & weeds. He said, Yes, I know, but it used to be filled with nice vegetables of all sorts. But I simply let it go this year after planting them. As you can see, this was a big mistake. Just as fruits, veggies, & flowers need careful attention to reach full potential, how much the more do children need constant & careful attention? Make no mistake about this, friends! God didn’t give children the ability to train themselves! So, let us put in the time and effort to train children according to God’s ways.
