Still New?

Written by Bernard Adjei-Poku.

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have come new” (NKJV) 2 Corinthians 5:17

We’re all excited about New Year. Within the first few days in January, we send “Happy New Year” messages, wishing family and friends prosperity, good health, long life, joy, among others. We make new resolutions; we encourage ourselves that the year is going to be great. But after some time, it appears the year loses its ‘newness’. Not much of the New Year messages are seen; the best wishes vanish; for most people, things go back to normal. But really, isn’t the year still new? I think it is! For instance, 2022 will remain 2022 until it gives way to 2023. There is, however, the tendency to think and be excited about 2022 as ‘new year’ and then forget it is still new. This is, unfortunately, the attitude of most people, and it transcends into diverse aspects of our lives. For example, it’s amazing how people marry their wife or husband and all things are new, then after a few years, they tend to look for a ‘new wife or husband’. In our spiritual life, this is also true.

Our scripture text for today teaches us that those of us who are in Christ are “new creation”. We came into Christ by believing that He is the Son of God (Acts 8:37; Mark 16:15-16), dying with Him through baptism (Rom. 6:3-5) which gives us a new birth (John 3:3-5). Through this, Christ’s blood cleanse us of all sins; thus, the “old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).

So yes, we became new creation the day we came into Christ. We began a new life – being careful not to sin anymore, praying always, studying bible regularly, fellowshipping with the brethren often, etc. But are we still new? Or have we gone back to our old life? God wants us to stay in our newness always. Christ told the Ephesian church that they had “left their first love”. They were to remember, repent and go back to what they started (Rev. 2:4-5). We must be new all year round, unlike how we think of the New Year.

If you are not a new creation (Christian) yet? My dear, you have a glorious opportunity today so far as you have life. The grace of God is limitless, and you can share in today. All you need to do is to believe in Christ, repent and be baptized for the remission of sins and remain in His body, the Church (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:37-38; Matt. 28:18-20). When you do this, you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit who will help you to continue to be a new creature.

Once new, always new until we exhibit features of the old. The year 2022 is new and will remain new until it passes away. As new creatures in Christ, we must remain new until we pass away. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit strengthen us to continue in our new life throughout 2022 and beyond. Amen.
