Learn to follow

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (NAS) Mt. 16:24

As we start a new year like this, we all have wonderful plans for making it big within the year. Becoming successful in every venture starts from somewhere. How prepared are you to take off in the new year to achieve your set targets both spiritually and physically?

Naturally, most of us are not comfortable following others. But in all aspects of life involving more than one person, someone must lead and others must be willing to follow. Current successful leaders were some time ago great followers of others. In business and professional lives, we all need mentors and leaders in our fields to learn from them. You need to get roots before you can bear fruits. Maturity and success take time and that we must be willing to go through the process to become and maintain success.

Christ is the one and only leader in Christianity. In terms of spirituality, no human have the power to claim authority and demand followers. A leader is someone who knows, sees and shows the way. Learning to follow as a Christian means learning to: accept Christ’s leadership, to obey His precepts, and to imitate His example. It is one thing to take the initial step toward Christ to become a Christian, but following Him means that we are willing to follow till our last breath.

A good follower does not complain, make excuses, or lag behind; a good follower follows no matter the situation. But a good follower also knows whom to follow (Mt. 15:14). Peter wrote, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps” (1 Pet. 2:21). The Apostles became pillars of the Christian faith because they were willing and humble to learn by following Jesus.

Since we do not know the proper way to go in life (Prov. 16:25) and Christ does (Jn. 14:6), we have every reason to follow Him. When we understand that heaven is where we want to go and admit that we do not know how to get there, then it makes perfect sense to commit ourselves to following the One who has already made that journey (Col. 3:1-2).

Be a good follower today and become a great leader tomorrow. Be humble under the leadership of Christ to join Him one day in heaven.
