Basket Beginnings (Part I)

Written by Alhassan Mohammed Sandargo.

“He lifts me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock.” (NIV) Psalms 40:2

In ancient times, baskets were common in everyday life activities and were for several uses. They were used to keep bread, gather grapes, keep fruits generally, carry clay to the brickyard and for holding bulky articles.

In the course of time in the Old Testament, history was going to be impacted immensely through a “basket-carrying encounter”. It was all about a child born by parents in slavery in the land of Egypt. The time of his birth was just inappropriate, according to human assessment: it was time of slavery with oppression and hard labor, the King’s edict was to annihilate all boys at birth with seemingly every hope gone for the Hebrew people (Exodus 1:8-22).

However, it was the very time God chose to write an indelible memory of an event through a mere basket. After some period, baby Moses had to be kept in a papyrus basket to float on the Nile River. In the end, God caused Moses to be found by the daughter of Pharaoh, cared for by his own mother as a full-time well paid job, and later in life obtained a princely training and upbringing in the most powerful kingdom on earth at the time.

Today you may be in the basket for one reason or the other. And just as the common baskets had varying sizes, we may as well have our unique basket to serve a certain purpose in our lives. Numerous are the commentaries that arise from men, regarding our situations in life. But the projections of man are uncertain. What is important is to hang in with Him: He who is silently keeping watch over you. With Him, there are no uncertainties since He operates with a totally different perspective.

Again, you can have all the confidence that you are not alone, even if you are in a basket. It could be a great opportunity in bringing honor to the Lord. And he who causes the Lord to be honored will be showered with honor too (1Samuel 2:30b). Remember, Moses from a miserable and risky beginning ended in a palace as a prince through a vehicle called “basket”.

May we avail ourselves for any basket or river in this life that the Lord may deem fit for our encounter. And may the Lord continue to be our source of all things; both physical and spiritual as we keep meditating on His word. God bless you.
