The wrong kind of passion

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin” (NLT) Proverbs 29:22

There is no doubt that commitment and passion are bedfellows. To be truly committed to a course, one needs a sustained passion. A former British Prime Minister rightly said that “Success is the ability to move from one failure to another without loss of enthusiasm.”

Be that as it may, this same passion and enthusiasm that serve us the fuel for accomplishments can be our greatest curse as Christians. If our passion is driven by anger, our commitment becomes misplaced. We are no more committed to good works but to all kinds of sin; we are no more controlled by the spirit but by the flesh; we are no more slaves to righteousness but to sin (Read Romans 6:15-23)

In one of His earthly journeys, Christ Jesus was treated with hostility when he was passing through a Samaritan village, en route to Jerusalem. The sons of thunder, James and John requested that they commanded fire from heaven to consume the people. But Christ Jesus rebuked them, saying, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of (NASB) Luke 9:55. Likewise, when Peter drew his sword and slashed off the ears of the high priest’s slave, Christ enjoined him to put it back in the sheath: “Those who use the sword will die by the sword” (NLT) Matthew 26:52b.

Indeed, if the so-called religious extremists had the right kind of passion and the right kind of spirit, the world will be rid of all the mindless murders they are committing in the name of God. God can dispatch legions of angels to do battle if religion and in fact Christianity is about physical combat. What kind of spirit are you possessed of? Where lies your commitment?
