The Love of Money

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.” (NIV) Ecclesiastes 5:10

It is becoming financially demanding to meet day-to-day living expenses such that people must take up two or more jobs in order to provide for themselves and their families. These financial difficulties coupled with man’s inherent desire to want more of everything have made people lovers of money. Their day starts with thoughts of money and ends with thoughts of money.

Today, people are more than willing to go to all lengths to make money. Good virtues are trampled upon because money is at stake. Family and friendship have been broken because of money. The world now rates money above all other things and sadly, the love of money is slowly gaining ground among Christians as well.

Yes! Today’s Christian must survive in a world where money is everything, but money must not be everything to us. The good book admonishes us to work hard and hard work pays so a Christian must work to earn a living but in doing so, let us not be carried away and neglect the main purpose of being in this world - to be the light and salt (Matthew 5:13-16).

In our quest to earn a living as Christians, let us show the world that money is not everything and that there is more to life than money. God bless us all.
