Rely on God’s wisdom

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (NIV) Proverbs 1:7

Bible reading: Proverbs 1:1-7

According to the wise preacher Solomon, those who acknowledge their own limitations as “simple” and “young” are more likely to pursue God’s wisdom. Human philosophies, principles and guidelines can never be compared to the wisdom of God. The wise man says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. In order words, the fear or awe, respect and reverence for God provide a solid foundation (“beginning”) for one’s life. Interestingly, there is no greater enemy to the fear of the Lord than the self-conceit of one’s own “wisdom”. Such self-conceit puts one in the category of fools as described by Solomon: “Fools despise wisdom and discipline”.

What does it mean to despise wisdom? This means setting aside the word of God and depending on your own intuitions for life. Believers demonstrate they are living wisely by depending on God as the standard for life and demonstrating it in their lifestyles.

As the saying goes, “there can be no victory without sacrifice”, therefore to get godly wisdom and its associated blessings you must seek it earnestly. Proverbs 2:4-8 explains this further: “And if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones”.

How then do we seek wisdom? We should look for wisdom through regular study and meditation of God’s word, and prayers. Unfortunately, these important tasks seem rather time-consuming for many believers, therefore are often neglected. This is clearly one of the deceitful ways of Satan which leads us to believe that we can be wise and achieve success without God. Beloved, it is time to wake up and bring back God in our daily schedules. Let us be wise and depend on God’s wisdom rather than our own (Proverbs 3:5-6). Amen!
