Blessing to the City

Written by Drew Chapados.

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (NIV) Matthew 5:14-16

Godliness does not just benefit the individual. There is a consistent teaching in the Bible from Abraham that godly people bless the city they live in. Even when the Jews were going to captivity God instructed them to be a blessing in the city where they ended up as captives (Jeremiah 29:7). It makes sense that godly people will bless the city while the speech of the wicked will tear it apart (Proverbs 11:11).

Jesus declared his disciples to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16). Our hearts desire good things in the lives of others.

This is one of the great contrasts between those who have a heart for God and those who are bent on wickedness: our desire for those living around us is good while the wicked do not care if there is devastation.
