“You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the Law?" (NIV) Romans 2:23

Bible Reading: Matthew 23:23-28

In Matthew 23, we see Jesus educating His disciples and crowd about what the teachers of the law and Pharisees do. We are told to obey them and do everything they tell us, but we must not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach (Matthew 23:2-3).

This attitude of the Pharisees is not different from Christendom. Most of us who have been blessed to lead other brethren, do find ourselves doing the very things Jesus criticized the Pharisees. They (Pharisees) neglected the most essential things of the law like mercy, justice, and faithfulness. This made them less productive and effective in the things of God. They were passionate to keep the law but the POWER therein they rejected.

If we call ourselves Christians and desire to be seen by God as productive in Him, we should not neglect the deeds that separate us from the Pharisees, thus the deeds that the power of God produces in us. These deeds can be seen in Galatians 5:22; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

We will be in for trouble with God if we also neglect these things. The harder we work at what God expects from us, the lesser we will try to hide who we truly are. Let’s avoid masquerading ourselves as devoted Disciples of Christ when we are a spiritual sham and get serious with God today.

Pretending to be who we are not doesn’t help us to be effective and qualified citizens for Heaven.
