The forgetful nature of man

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“He sought God during the days of Zachariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.” “But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.” (NIV) 2 Chronicles 26:5, 16

The story of Uzziah comes readily to mind when it comes to man and his forgetful nature. Uzziah was crowned king of Jerusalem at the age of sixteen. He was one of the successful kings of Jerusalem but died a shameful death because he forgot that mighty hand that made him successful and allowed pride to take the better part of him.

Uzziah’s story is not different from what is happening today. When we so desperately want something from God, we diligently do all that He requires of us so we can be in the position to receive. Just like Uzziah, as long as we sought the Lord, God gives us success but we soon forget that God granted that success and we ought to remain faithful to Him.

When man becomes successful in his education, business and any earthly venture, man then tends to forget the role of God in attaining those successes. Similarly, many of us believed so much in God when we were in the process of attaining higher education, but after being successful due to his abundant blessing of knowledge, we end up shamefully questioning the existence of God. Just like Uzziah, who forgot that this success depended on the fact that he sought after God, therefore, died miserably, so can our fate be if we continue on this slippery road.

May we never forget the God factor in our lives as He blesses us and may we continually remember that we are nothing without God.
