Hand to the plow

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

But Jesus told him, ‘Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God” (NLT) Luke 9:62

Excuses, no matter how plausible they may sound, are never tolerated in Christ’s kingdom. For most of us who profess to be Christians, we underestimate the cost of our discipleship. With sugar-coated words, we are told by some so-called men of God that Christianity is all sail with no storms. Eventually, when the storms set in, we become visibly perturbed because that is not what we bargained for.

The sense of entitlement to special privileges without recourse to the cross was the dominant mentality for most followers of Christ in his days. The people were enchanted with the miracles of Jesus and they unwittingly thought that is all there is to following Christ. In our time, the population of people with such mentality is bursting at the seams. Christianity in our days is highly commercialised; most people are patronising Christ. In my home country (Ghana), we read and hear of people who troop to ‘miracle centres’ even though they have no sort of affinity with Christ. And I believe similar situations are happening in other places around the globe.

My dear reader, Christianity is about discipleship. It is no wonder our Master mandated us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Discipleship is 100% commitment to the kingdom business in season and out of season, in thick and thin, in good times and bad times. So, let us seek first to be committed to our Master’s work and if He so desires, He will add everything to us (Matthew 6:33).
