Godly Exercise

Written by Christopher Opey Tetteh.

"Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."(NIV) 1 Timothy 4:7-8

It's really amazing what one can achieve through consistent self-discipline. How many times do we observe some of our athletes like Usain Bolt, Serena Williams and the others and wonder at the rate and ease in which they perform on the field of play?

We are then told by these athletes through interviews and documentaries that their abilities did not spring up but were developed through vivid and vigorous exercise and training and that sets them apart.

Paul admonished Timothy, who was a younger Preacher to train himself to be Godly (1 Timothy 4:7). Physical training is good, but spiritual training for Godliness is much better and awesome. Spiritual strength comes only to a devoted Christian who has the will to practice it. We need to develop our spiritual muscles through consistent effort and daily disciplinary act according to God's word and doing God's will in all due reverence.

Also, we can be spiritually fit by taking regular moral inventory, admitting our failures as sinners, and seeking to make amends by returning to walk in a Godly manner as quickly as possible and foregoing worldly pleasures that cause us to err against God and His Will.

Finally, we should motivate ourselves to continue in Godly living routines by looking forward to both physical and eternal rewards. The benefits in this present life and the life to come (1 Timothy 4:8) will not come to us overnight but rather through continuous Godly practice.
