In the darkness with God
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. " (NKJV) Proverbs 23:4
The fear of the unknown is a feeling that dominates the lives of many people. At the beginning of a brand-new year, most people become anxious about what the year holds for them. This can be borne out of failures in the lives of others or in our own lives the previous year. Sometimes the realities on the ground shrink our confidence to achieve the things we set out to do in a new year.
What happens when we allow fear to rule our lives? We tend to play it safe, lower the standards, give up on our dreams, et cetera. But what if we show you a better way?
When the British and her allies were anxious about Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939, King George VI reassured the nation of the providence of God. Quoting from a line of poetry, he concluded his speech with the words I believe is what we need to hear so that we can bid our anxieties goodbye. These lines are from “The Gate of the Year,” a poem written in 1908 by Minnie Louise Haskins:
I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year "Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown."
And he replied, "Go into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God that shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way!"
In this new year, let us walk into the unknown with God. As long as we walk hand in hand with him, this year will be our best year ever. Amen.
