Vanishing Vanities

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

“The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”” (NIV) Eccl.1:1-2

Human beings have unending taste for new things and that appetite never ceases. We are always craving for things we don’t have hoping that those items will ultimately lead us to happiness (if you don’t have it then you need to get it). These interests have increased with innovations and frequent scientific discoveries. Unfortunately, the more we have, the more we crave for more. Man never gets satisfied and this has led humanity into engaging in all sorts of activities to achieve these physical desires.

Vanity means having excessive pride or admiration of one’s own appearance or achievements. There is nothing wrong with achievements, we are to do our best, and try our hardest. God expects His followers to do genuine works to survive (2Thess 3:10) but don’t let attaining your physical achievements be your main aim on earth. Men like Abraham, David and Solomon had great wealth, yet they walked with God.

As we engage in all sorts of works to maintain physical strength and health, remember life is a gift from God and comes with a divine purpose. Naked we came and naked we shall go, let us always be guided by scriptures. Things of this world are pushing many people away from God (1 John 2:15-17). The love for worldly items and services is pushing God from the hearts of many. All we are craving for will vanish one day. What will remain is our soul and spirit from God.

The great Preacher and wise King Solomon had many wives, great material wealth, wisdom and created massive entertainment for himself. At the end of all his expedition, he concluded that without God all is vanity. Seek God today and maintain a lovely relationship with the creator of this universe. Our focus must be on God and not ourselves and our possessions.

What is your purpose in this life? To amass all the material wealth as much as you can to the neglect of your soul? Remember we are in transition on earth and we will surely leave one day.
