Anger and the righteousness God desires

Written by Anyim Daniel.

“Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires." (NIV) James 1:20

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, anger is a feeling of extreme displeasure, hostility, indignation or exasperation toward something or someone. Psychologists also make us understand that anger is normal in every human being, even though it incites us to cause a lot of pain and damage to others and properties when proper control is not exercised.

God in His divinity also exhibits His anger at the godlessness and wickedness of man (Rom. 1:18). So many things provoke anger in us on a daily basis; disrespect from subordinates at work or siblings at home, etc.

But have we ever pondered over our reactions in those short moments of anger, and their implications on the righteousness God expects of us as Christians? We make rash decisions and drastic actions that both satisfy our cravings to react and undermine the righteousness of God in us. After our reactions, we are left in a state of utter remorse and regret.

Luckily for us, God through His Word prescribes for us an antidote to anger in James 1:19; being quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger.
