During tears of joy and sorrow

Written by Alhassan Mohammed Sandargo.

"Is anyone of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise." (NIV) James 5:13

The experience of joy and sorrow seem to be inevitable in the journey of life but we can always be confident that the Lord is with us through it all.

Several things can make us sorrowful. For example, when we have missed an opportunity, when there seem to be a delayed blessing, when we are hoping for a healing, when finances are nothing to write home about, when uncertainties stare us in the face, when we are pummeled by some weakness, when there is pressure of life upon us and when relationships are so unstable. These can truly well up tears in our eyes, but amidst all these, we are encouraged to pray (James 5:13). Are you in any trouble at the moment? Then do well to pray. No trouble is too big enough for the Lord (Genesis 18:14, Jeremiah 32:27). He is only waiting to hear you pray and your prayer can indeed move mountains and make a great difference (James 5:16). Therefore, let not tears of sorrow flow away, without a word to the Master. He will take care of both tears and worries, for He cares for you (1Peter 5:7)

Sometimes, we get overwhelmed with joy because of an answered prayer, a surprise from the Lord, some good gestures, a family reunion, times of restitution, an impossible made possible, an open door of opportunity, having expectations finally met, etc. In all these things, we may end up with tears of joy but that must not be the end of the story. The joyful songs of praise must never depart from us (James 5:13). We need to show gratitude to the source of our joy and happiness: and that source ultimately is God. He deserves our thanks, songs and praises, for His love endures forever (Psalm 107:1).

In summary, prayers and songs of praises need to be part of us as we constantly experience ups and downs in this life. They are two essentials of our calling as Christians. Jesus loves you.

Reflection

How can you develop an attitude of regular prayers in good and difficult times?

Can you sing songs of praise while in trouble? (Acts 16:16-40)
