In all things give thanks

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

"Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."(NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:18

At church some few years ago, the action of one man caught my attention. The secretary at the end of the service was giving the list of thanksgiving from brethren. It is so normal to hear that a brother/sister is thanking God for something good that had happened to him. But one man’s thanksgiving immediately sent my mind to 1 Thessalonians 5:18. This man brought this thanksgiving offering even though what had happened to him will be termed, bad, by human perception.

He said he vowed to God to bring him an amount of money as thanksgiving if God provides safe delivery to his wife. The wife indeed had safe delivery but the child passed soon after they got home from the hospital. This is a man who had lost a new born baby but he still brought his vow of the said amount to God as thanksgiving offering. How many of us can do this?

Many a times, we make a vow with God that if He blesses us with a need or want, we will in turn do something as thanksgiving to him. If we wait and the said need or want is not met, what do we do to the vow? We just keep our part of the vow to ourselves. This man’s story should motivate us to honour our part of the vow even if we think God has not honoured His.

Sometimes, some Christians think somethings in the bible are impossible to practice in our day to day lives but we get encouraged when another Christian lives these things we perceive to be impossible to practice. We are almost through the year, things may not have gone as planned but let your offering of thanksgiving never seize because God still loves you. God bless you.
