"Do you not know that in a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize." (NIV) I Corinthians 9:24
I remember my Junior Secondary School (JSS) or Junior High School (JHS) days so well. One thing that made those days interesting was the fact that every pupil in class wants to be the best in class. It was prestigious to gain the first position at the end of an academic term though it came with no special prize. The reward for being first in class at the end of the term was the pride you got when our teacher - Sir William introduces you to the class that you were the best student for the term.
The pride to excel in all aspect of our life on this earth propels us to do the unthinkable sometimes like having months of sleepless nights and forgoing all kinds of pleasures just to prepare adequately to sit an exam. After academic excellence, we go on to struggle for career excellence as well. We wake up so early in the morning to be at work on time and dedicate the entire day to ensuring we complete our tasks. With those of us who are married and blessed with children, the effort we put into pleasing our spouses and ensuring our children get the best life has to offer is enormous.
However, it is sad to say that when it comes to the effort we put into worshiping the one who blesses us with all these earthly gifts, we put in the least. I am as guilty as you! It is so much of a bother to us to make time with our Lord. In fact, we are never on time to church services, we never learn His word like the way we learn our academic books and we never make time to share His word with others.
If only we could put in the same amount of effort we put into achieving our earthly goals and if only we could worship Him like it is a competition we desperately want to win, He will be extremely pleased and blessings that supersede all earthly achievements will be bestowed on us. May the Lord come to our aid as we seek to worship Him with all that is within us. God bless you.
