Taking a Stand

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

"But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way."(NIV) Daniel 1:8

Bible reading: Daniel 1

Living in a world that is hostile and not comfortable for godly worship has caused many Christians to prefer to hide their faith in the midst of people for them to be accepted. For fear of being ridiculed, some believer wants to be “neutral” in their daily endeavours. Joseph of Arimathea who buried the Messiah was part of the Sanhedrin that condemned Jesus to death but did not openly declare his faith because he feared to be victimized and probably lose his position. He was a secret disciple of Jesus (John 19:38). After Christ’s death, he came out boldly to declare his faith and gave the Messiah a befitting burial.

Decision-making is our greatest opportunity and trap as well. Every day in our lives, we make critical decisions either to support or kick against worldly acts. Daniel went through such a challenge and he handled it not only courageously, but graciously, and effectively (Daniel 1:8-21). Daniel assessed and doubted the food and wine on the foreign land because it was likely to contain some things forbidden by God at that time. He showed appreciation, courtesy and reasonability in rejecting the King’s offer. He politely requested an alternative against what he suspected to be evil. God honoured Daniel's commitment, as well as his courageous faithfulness and so will He do same for us if we choose to stand for him in this end times.

God wants Christians to take a stance in this hostile world. To take a bold stand for Christ. Go often to the foot of the cross and remember that Christ not only died for your sins but also that He was raised from the dead and that He is coming again soon to judge the living and the dead.

There is a cost in taking a stand for Christ. It may be your reputation, business or your resources. If you live to please God, God will take care of your reputation. To take a bold stand for Christ, go often to the cross, pay the price and show up when there is a need. It is not enough to verbally confess your faith in Christ. You can show that through your behaviour, attitudes and uncompromising stand against sin. What do you stand for? Stand with God and God will surely stand with you. Amen
