“He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe” (NIV) Proverbs 28:26

Bible Reading: Exodus 5:1-14, 22-23

What do we understand by walking in wisdom? The story of the Israelites is not a mere historical record to be taken lightly. We can all learn from them, both as leaders of our various congregations or as believers in general. The people of God went through a lot in Egypt. They faced so many challenges and their cry went up to God. God provided them with an escape route like always, but it became difficult for them.

Pharaoh’s heart was hardened; the people of God’s plight worsened and Moses called out to the Lord again saying “O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” (Exodus 5:22-23)

It was hard for the Israelites to believe that a glorious exodus was just around the corner. So it is with us Christians. We may be faced with challenges that prove that there is no hope. It could be in our jobs, relationships, marital homes, and life in general. Whatever the situation may be, let us remember that before conditions get better for His children, God sometimes tests our faith in Him by allowing our suffering to increase momentarily.

As effective Christians, let us never forget that even when we are obedient to the Lord, the skies of adversity will not always clear immediately when we pray to God. Circumstances may get worse before they improve but praise God. His grace will sustain us and the storm will surely pass away.
