The race of life

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.” (NKJV) 1 Corinthians 9:24

Life is described by many people in different ways. Some say it is a school we are attending and it has the largest population because all humans are going through it. Others also describe life as a stage performance, you finish your act and you leave the scene. Let us consider life as a race today.

Sports or games have taken over the world attracting the largest audience and sponsorship compared to other events. So many people are trying hard to be part of one game or the other. Have you ever considered what happens before sports personalities come on fields to showcase their talents?

All athletes participate in a race with the intention to win and not just to add to the numbers. In a race, entering is not enough; one must win the race to gain the prize. The runners in those races strain to do their very best. An athlete that wants to win will do whatever is necessary to win. How serious are we Christians when it comes to the race of life? Think about the self-control or discipline athletes today have to implement to be successful and gain a fleeting reward. Think of their psychological, biological, nutritional and physical conditioning they endure in order to win an athletic crown. Because of this perishable symbol of victory, men are making immeasurable sacrifices. “And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown”. 1 Corinthians 9:25. Yet some of us wouldn't even give up on food for a brother’s soul and progress of the gospel!

Why is it that people can be admired and praised for being "fanatical" when it comes to sports, a hobby, or some temporary goal? Some are honoured and appreciated as best supporters. Yet the earnest Christian is ridiculed for taking God too seriously! This world is not the home for Christians. How much effort are you putting forth to gain heaven?

Therefore, I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus, I fight: not as one who beats the air. 1Corinthians 9:26. Paul reveals his determination by running straight to the goal with purpose in every step. Paul believed that he could forfeit his own salvation if he became selfish and complacent. You can win the race of life by allowing God to control your life and subjecting yourself to the instruction of God. Heaven is the prize, go for it.
