Worldliness – The second tool of the devil

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“I'm not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one” (NLT) John 17:16

Christ Jesus foreknew that one of the stratagems of the devil is to corrupt the commitment of his disciples with worldliness. In his classic petition to God the Father on our behalf, He asked that we live in the world but the world should not live in our hearts.

How does the devil corrupt our commitment with the tool of worldliness? First, he causes us to substitute our pure unbridled love for God, which is typical of new born babies of the Word, with the love for the world.

“Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you” (NLT) 1 John 2:15.

In furtherance of this stratagem, the devil offers you gifts from the world. Like the Grecian gift of a horse to the Trojans, it looks attractive and harmless; it might even seem indicative of the blessings and approval of God, but you unwrap it and misery awaits you.

“For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world” (NLT) 1 John 2:16.

Like the rich fool, the devil blinds us to this truth: “And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever” (NLT) 1 John 2:17.

Beloved, never underestimate the craftiness of the devil. He has led many and continues to lead countless people into the entanglements of worldliness and ultimately eternal damnation. The only way to escape this efficacious trap of the devil is to be vigilant, through meditation on the word and prayer. Remember our Saviour’s admonishment:

“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” (NLT) Mark 8:36.
