Critical choices – How to spend your time?

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to” (NLT) Ephesians 5:15-17

Each day, at twelve midnight, God deposits 86,400 seconds into our time account. God gives all of us, whether great or small, the level playing field with our time. Depending on how we expend this critical resource, we end up better off or worse off, rich or poor, fulfilled or unfulfilled.

Time is the currency of life. It is the life seed that needs to be planted with the utmost efficiency. Like all the seeds, they look unattractive and without any obvious potential. However, when it is planted and carefully tendered, it sprouts into greatness. The same can be said about our time. If Rome was not built in a day, it means it was built every second, consistently.

How do we spend our time prudently? The following scriptures should be borne in mind, in addition to the foundational text:

“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven” (NLT) Ecclesiastes 3:1

“Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honour him in your youth before you grow old and say, ‘Life is not pleasant anymore’” (NLT) Ecclesiastes 12:1

“LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered – how fleeting my life (NLT) Psalm 39:4

“Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom” (NLT) Psalm 90:12
