Good personified

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowd, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (NLT) Matthew 9:35-36

As I pondered over the theme for this month, “Do not grow weary of doing good,” one of my favourite, oft-sung Sunday songs came to the fore:

Everywhere He went

He was doing good

This mighty healer

He healed the leper

When the crippled saw Him

They started walking

Everywhere he went, my Lord was doing good

As a kid, I just enjoyed the mere fun and jollity of singing it. But here is a piece of song that captures the good personified nature of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ. He was the busiest of all men yet he had time for the poor and down-trodden in society.

In this time and age when prayers are offered to the highest bidder and preferential treatment has become the welfare policy of most churches, the Lord’s people need to be reminded of the need for doing good without expecting a payback or growing weary.
