Day of good news

Written by Alhassan Mohammed Sandargo.

Then they said to each other, "What we're doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let's go at once and report this to the royal palace." NIV (2 Kings 7:9)

In the nation of Israel, it came a time when a terrible dearth had robbed them of peace, joy, and life itself. There was virtually nothing to buy or eat except for complete languishing. But the word of God through the prophet Elisha turned true as always to Samaria. There was going to be an abundance of food the following day (2 Kings 7:1). However, God desires to work His great deeds through human agencies. It is interesting; the type of agents the Lord uses His for good pleasure. They must be our motivation to go all out into sharing and remembering where we also started.

To be suffering from leprosy in the time of Old Testament Israel was to be rejected, abandoned and quarantined. By implication, due to leprosy, one seems to have a shuttered life with almost no hope. Thus, four lepers after declaring a hopeless comment (2 Kings 7:3-4) were unknowingly availing themselves for a hopeful act of deliverance for the whole nation through the Lord’s hands. In our state of hopelessness, we can still serve as a timely instrument by the Lord to serve a good end. We need to avail ourselves too.

After the Lord had divinely intervened and scared the Aramean soldiers away through the four hungry lepers, they got enough food, gold, and clothing for themselves (2Kings 7:8-9). However, they came to themselves regarding that great intervention. To them, it was a day of good news. And the implication? They had to make the good news relevant: the good news of abundance of food supply- plus some found treasure. Apparently, the weakest and the secluded (four lepers) were used to bring deliverance.

There may be several reasons why we may be reluctant to volunteer and risk it towards sharing “good news”. God can equally use us today as instruments or channels of good news. We may currently be financially broke, emotionally downcast, inundated with family responsibilities, indecisive in some sensitive matter, having spiritual uncertainties, some secret/personal struggles, some threatening health issues, figuring out the will of God, etc.

In the above “burdens” (and even more), we become good candidates for reaping much glory for our God, as he works beautifully through us. Today can become “the day of good news” to someone because of you, irrespective of your needs and struggles. Stay blessed.
