Anger is an emotional response to a perceived wrong or injustice. Anger is normally expressed when one misinterprets circumstances, makes a mistake in judgement or reacts quickly because he or she feels threatened or hurt. There are many warnings about the danger of anger in scriptures. These include; “do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, …” (Ecclesiastes 7:9) and others listed in Matthew 5:22 Ephesians 4:26-31.
It is necessary to remind ourselves that ‘Anger’ is one little letter away from ‘danger’. When one is angry, his/her emotions are taken over by anger and a heavy burden is placed on the individual. This can have a serious effect on the heart and in extreme cases, claim a life.
The Bible admonishes us not to give full vent to our anger in Proverbs 29:11. We are also not to revenge whenever we are hurt in an unjustified manner in Romans 12:19. The good book admonishes us to seek wisdom from God to control our anger.
Brother James in his book 1:19-20 said we must be slow to speak. We must consider ourselves fortunate to have pace setters like the apostles and disciples who inspire us through the word of God and guide us to refrain from these dangerous indicators of uncontrolled anger that hinder our goal of obtaining eternal life we are pressing towards.
Apostle Peter, a victim of an act of anger (John 18:10-11) said, we should give our anger which becomes a burden to God and he will take control (1 Peter 5:7). Let us be guided by the advice in Romans 12:18: “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men”.
