Faith that moves mountain

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (NIV) Matthew 17:20-21

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV) Hebrew 11:1

“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the father may be glorified in the son.” (NIV) John 14:13

In Matthew 17:14-19, a man whose son had seizures and was possessed by a demon had brought his son to the disciples to be healed but the disciples could not heal the boy so he went to Jesus instead. After Jesus healed the boy, the disciples asked Jesus privately why they failed to heal the boy. The answer Jesus gave them can be found in the bible reading (Matthew 17:20-21) and this devotion will focus on that.

A mustard seed is small, round and about one to two millimeters in diameter. This seed is very small indeed! For Christ to say that the faith of His disciples was smaller than a mustard seed should help us conclude that the disciples had very minute faith. For people who saw Him do so many miracles, one will expect that their faith will be greater than one of the smallest seeds in the world. Could we also be like the disciples? Would Christ look at us as Christians and say to us that we have no faith?

If we have faith as little as a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for us. This statement is very exciting. In as much as this statement is exciting, it means we must thrive to increase our faith from less than the size of a mustard seed to a mustard seed and beyond. We can only know if we are increasing in faith by continually acting according to the Lord’s will (Luke 17:5-10) and we can only act according to the Lord’s will if we equip ourselves with the manual about Him (the bible). Your faith must always show in your works (James 2:14-26).

We can also increase our faith when we acknowledge and are grateful to the Lord for the “little” blessings He showers our way daily - the gift of life, the good health, the family we have, the job we have, everything we have and what we don’t even have. Acknowledging that He knows what is good for us at all times. As we continue this path daily when the “big problems” which I call “the mountain” come our way, our faith will be sizable enough to surmount it to the glory of our God.

However, for non-Christians, you can only come to share in this faith Christians have when you accept Christ as the son of the living God and give yourself up for baptism then you can build this faith that moves mountain.
