The battle of the mind, the reservoir of the heart

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise” (NLT) Philippians 4:8

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life” (NLT) Proverbs 4:23

Transformation starts with the mind and wells up in the heart. This year, if we are to experience God’s best, then we should nourish our minds with God’s word and guard our hearts against the standards of the world.

A general principle of computing is GIGO – garbage in, garbage out. Our eyes and ears are windows to our soul. The eyes and ears are not garbage receptors. To nourish our minds with truth, honourability, righteousness, purity, loveliness, admirability, excellence, and praiseworthiness, we should be very careful with what we feast our eyes on and tune our ears to. There is a lot of filth on social media, television, radio, books, and the list goes on. Sex has been cheapened. Pornography is no more shameful. You can’t command a bird not to fly over your head, but certainly, you can prevent it from perching on your head. We need to be conscientiously selective of what we choose as entertainment. We should quickly and boldly discard anything contrary to Philippians 4:8.

As we win the battle of the mind against the standards of the world, we need to jealously and diligently guard our hearts. The reservoir that is pooled in our hearts by practicing Philippians 4:8 can easily be polluted or even dry up if we let our guards down. If in the course of the year, we stop studying God’s word, we stop praying, or we keep on forsaking the assembly of the saints, eventually, we will stop practicing Philippians 4:8 and the devil will inhabit our minds and make it his workshop. The devil will not only take over our heart but he will make it more wicked than before (Read Matthew 12:43-45).

I will strongly encourage you to have bible study daily to fortify your mind and heart always. Once your mind and heart are flooded with godly messages, there will be no room for the devil (James 4:7)
