Pleasing unto the Lord
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” (KJV) Colossians 3:23-24
Whatever work we find to do at a point we naturally expect people around us to appreciate the efforts we put in or at least shower some praises to keep us motivated. It could be a domestic chore, voluntary work, a daily work schedule or a daunting task by our employers. When the lines of praise do not show up at all or as often as we expect or even when they are given to others whom we feel are less deserving, we turn to be disappointed and lose the enthusiasm for the job.
It is in circumstances like these that the need arises that we evaluate our motivation for what we do. First, as a Christian, we are God’s chosen people and by that, in God’s infinite wisdom, He strategically placed us in certain places and at opportune times to accomplish His purpose for us.
The Apostle Paul made a profound statement in Galatians 1:10 “For am I now seeking the favour of men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ”. If we still try to gain the admiration of men in the work we do, then we wouldn’t be part of God’s chosen people. So, whatever we find ourselves doing, let us choose to work as though we are working for the Lord. No job is menial; be it a truck driver, a shopkeeper, a nurse or an accountant, every point when you wake up to work, do it for God.
One key component of knowing that you are on track working for God is your attitude and you can go by this borrowed acronym.
