Love the Lord with all of your soul

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” (NIV) Deuteronomy 10:12

Many of us remember how we felt and how we behaved when we first fell in love with someone of the opposite sex. For those married, it motivated us to marry our spouses and continue to love them. For those yet to marry, it is that driving force that is pushing us to prepare assiduously towards marrying that wonderful person. Something unique about the person motivated us to draw closer and after we got closer, we discovered more great attributes and then we finally decided to take the bold step of spending our entire life with that person. The excitement of falling in love cannot be explained enough until it is experienced. We go out of our way to please the other person and if we accidentally hurt that person, we will apologize to ensure we are forgiven and won’t repeat that act again. We spend our last penny on this special one just to ensure the person is fine. The length we go just to show another human that we love them is just overwhelming.

Fellow Christians, we decided to become Christians not because we were forced but because we discovered something great about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ so we got closer and found more great attributes that moved us to repent, confess and get baptized into His Church. We are now Christians, so why can’t we love our Lord, Jesus Christ? Why can’t we go all the way to please Him? Why can’t we learn His likes and dislikes so we can avoid sinning against Him? Why do we find it difficult to go before Him and ask for forgiveness when we sin against Him? If we go all length to love our fellow human who we cannot trust to love us till eternity, how much longer should we go to love our Lord, Jesus Christ who loves and will love us till eternity? His love for us endures even when we continue to sin against Him each and every day.

Anytime you express any act of love towards your spouse or that special person you are about to marry, ask yourself, “how much love have I showed my Saviour compared to what I am showing to a fellow human?” and then be motivated to always do the Saviour’s will and walk in His ways as a sign of your love for Him. God bless you.
