Why do bad things sometimes happen to good people?

Written by Sandra Essel.

“His wife said to him, "Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!" He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.” (NIV) Job 2:9-10

Why do bad things sometimes happen to good people? This is a very popular question, mostly asked by people going through difficult situations or witnessing a loved one with good character facing hard challenges such as physical illness, death, false accusations or dismissal from a job. Often the question arises with the thought that God is not acting fairly and therefore has to be blamed.

Job’s wife knew how faithful her husband was to God. Therefore, she couldn’t understand why God allowed her husband’s predicaments. She was questioning the essence of remaining faithful if there is no benefit to it than to go through difficult situations yourself. As a result, her only conclusion was for her husband to curse God and die. After all, God is to be blamed.

Similarly, many blame God for the challenges they go through, forgetting the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 46:1-3 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Despite our challenges, the presence of God is always available for us to experience His strength, comfort, sustaining love and assurance. So, let’s be conscious of God’s presence in our lives at all times. This will help us maintain our faith in God than blame Him for our challenges. The storm will surely pass in His time and according to His perfect plan!
