The Christian mindset – Unity in mind

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had” (NLT) Acts 4:32

The evidence of our discipleship to Christ is our unity in mind:

“I in them and You in Me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them as You have loved Me” (IKJV) John 17:23

We can only be united in mind and purpose if we are all members of one body, the church established by Christ (Matthew 16:18; Colossians 3:15). This unity is borne out of our common obedience to the gospel and common cause (Acts 5:12)

Unity in mind does not imply homogeneity in approach. It is living in harmony in spite of our diversity, like the white and black keys on a piano that blend to produce harmony:

“May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (NLT) Romans 15:5-6

Divisions are created in the body of Christ, the church, when some decide to obey the doctrines and teachings of men rather than Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:10-17). Instead of fighting together for the faith (Philippians 1:27; 2:2), we rather fight each other.

Love, true love for each other will engender unity:

“Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude” (NLT) 1 Peter 3:8
