The “many”

Written by Alhassan Mohammed Sandargo.

Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles? (NIV) Matthew 7:22

It has been the tendency of man in his endeavors, to be associated with the majority to feel belonged and acknowledged. The concept of the majority taking charge ranges from political realms to culturally acceptable norms and practices. Approval is determined by where the majority swings. But in the sight of God, the majority may be seen in a different light vis-a-vis the ‘few’ who are mostly sidelined.

The Bible teaches some valuable truth about the matter to guide those who desire to totally depend on God. On the day of judgement, many will be found wanting because they followed the majority. From the days of old, man is admonished: "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.” (Exodus 23:2a). And prior to this command, the majority had been annihilated through the great deluge in the days of Noah. (Genesis 7:23)

Hard to say, but true to mention, that in the sight of God "…many are invited, but few are chosen."(Matt. 22:14). Yet nobody is prevented from being on the Lord’s side –for “whosoever wills, may come” (hymnist, Philip P. Bliss).

Jesus, in his teaching on the Mount, continues to mention how broad the way to destruction is. And this broadway is said to accommodate the majority. The ‘many’ have their own way in life and are not told what to do. It includes paying no prize, having the easy going, being accepted by everybody, worshipping God ignorantly, disbelieve in God, materialism, overindulgence, etc. Additionally, the majority can be likened to travelers who have no limit to the size of baggage to carry, the kind of items they could possess or a particular entrance or exit signs to pay attention to. There are such a huge number of people in this category.

Unfortunately, there are also good people, religious persons and even morally irreproachable men and women who are also among the majority (remember that it takes more than these good qualities to escape the way of the majority). And nobody can be justified before God without acknowledging His son Jesus (John 3:18) because “…without me (Jesus), you can do nothing” (John 15:5b).

Make the right decision, save yourself today (Acts 2:40) and be rescued from the “many”. God cares for you. (1Peter 5:7)
