Children of God

Written by Myles MacMillan.

"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure"(NIV) 1 John 3:1-3

Have you ever given much thought to what it means to be a child of God? Many times when I consider my position before Him, I am left wondering why He would want anything to do with the human race. I think King David put it best in Psalm 8:3-9: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Sometimes we get caught up in our busy lives and forget to look at the stars. I really enjoy being outside on a clear night and preferably far away from any town or city so I can look up and see the heavens. Before David became King he was a shepherd and would have had plenty of time to look at the stars as well. David obviously found it humbling to look into the heavens and I feel the same way. When I gaze up and behold the massiveness of the universe I can’t help but realize how small I am. David says God created the heavens with his fingers! Why would a God so big and powerful care about this tiny spec we call earth – let alone someone like me? The answer is because He loves us! As David says in verse 5, He loves us enough to crown us with glory and honor and allow us to be rulers over His creation.

Even more amazing than that, as John says in 1 John 3, we have the privilege of being called the children of this all-powerful and loving creator. John says that God lavishes love on us. Even if all this proof of His love weren’t enough, we also have His son, who came to this earth, lived a perfect life, and died for my sins and yours. How can we respond to this amazing love? I think the key to this answer is in 1 John 3:3: “All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.” If we are moved by His love for us we need to respond by purifying ourselves. We can find out how to do this by studying the bible and applying Jesus’ teachings to our lives. If you are a Christian, maybe it’s time to reflect on your position as a child of God and how you can purify yourself for Him even more.
