The big heart of a father

Written by Daily Inspirer Team.

“…But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” (NIV) Luke 15:20

Bible reading: Luke 15:11-32

In most part of the world, many are celebrating Father’s day. Fathers play important roles in the upbringing of children and stability in the family. The wife loves her husband for his unconditional love. The girl loves her dad for always being there for her and often sees him as her first boyfriend. The boy wishes to be strong-hearted like his dad;his mentor. So, what makes this man made of clay so special to his loved ones?

The story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) tells us of a father who has two sons. The younger son demanded his share of inheritance and departed to squander it. It is expected that the father would forget about his prodigal son and concentrate on the one at home, but he didn’t, he always waited for the return of his son. And when the squanderer; the prodigal son finally returned, his father had compassion on him and accepted him as his own once again. This story brings to light the big heart of a father! Take a moment to think about the father in your life (this person may not be your biological father). Recall the number of times he was forgiving and opened his heart to you when you messed up really bad. In cases where he disciplined you, we believe you could you see the big heart behind his stern face beating to the lyrics “I’m disciplining you because I love you! (Proverbs 3:12)”.

In as much as we have awesome fathers, there are disappointing ones too. Many fathers have failed to perform their roles and because of that their children or spouses feel embittered at the thought of Father’s day. Such situations are often sad and unfortunate. There may be reasons for the failure of these fathers but these reasons cannot definitely heal the hurt or restore the damages caused. The only trusted solution emphasised in the bible is forgiveness! (Matthew 6:14-15). If your father has failed you and your family, we want to encourage you to develop the big heart this time and forgive him.

Finally, as we remember our earthly fathers, let’s not forget our heavenly Father. God has and continues to demonstrate his love for us. He opens up and always accepts us even when we do not deserve such love (Psalms 103:13, Romans 5:8). He is the father of all. On this day, let’s show some love to our fathers for their big hearts!
