The Law of Moral Entropy

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me" (NLT) Romans 7:21-23

We probably know from our knowledge in the so-called hard sciences that a law is a situation or phenomenon that is invariable under some given conditions. In other words, a law such as gravity, motion, etc is certain to happen given some factors everywhere on planet earth. There are some principles or laws in the universe that we mere mortals cannot bend or escape. One of them is The Law of Moral Entropy.

The Law of Moral Entropy simply states that it is far easier to be destructive than to be constructive. Just think of the innumerable ways that you can ruin your life: robbing a bank, drunk driving, binge eating and drinking, imperilling your marriage by committing adultery, committing suicide, and a host of others. There are as many ways to mess up your life as there are in the sky. But think of how hard it is to avoid cutting corners and work hard for an honest living; to avoid bad company that can ruin your character; to stay faithful to your partner when your marriage turns lacklustre; to keep hope alive and keep smiling when you are going through the storms of life; to eat healthily and work out every day; to develop a consistent prayer and bible study habit, etc.

Why is it so difficult to do the good when we know that we need that to live a fulfilled life? It is the Law of Moral Entropy at work: although we want to do good, evil is right there with us. Our problem is not a lack of knowledge; it is a lack of action on the knowledge.

No matter what success gurus and life coaches tell you, we cannot overcome this law at work within us by developing strong self-will alone. It may help us to some point but eventually, we will crumble. The solution lies only in Christ: “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:25). Have you received Christ into your life? Let us show you how.
