...if God should visit the Earth!

Written by Listowell Sarfo Ababio.

“Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (ESV) John 14:23

Recommended movie: The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn

In the movie, “The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn” there is a statement made about the man, Noah Dearborn, that if God should visit the Earth, He would live in Dearborn’s home. This thrilling resonating statement came about because of the life this gentleman lived in his society; so transparent, honest, and conspicuous that, no one in the community could resist such a “charming effect.” But it got me thinking for a second, and even now as I write this, my heart is so heavy to think about the possibility of this happening anytime in my life.

Suffice it to say, the least that this statement is made not because of the house or simple possessions of this man, and yet such was his life, but the kind of person he was inward, which reflected how he lived outwardly, projecting such effect on others of his time.

As I reflect on what the Lord says, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14:23; ESV), I am quickly reminded that the quest for God coming to live with His children has been a divine wish since creation, and to be granted such grace requires one’s unconditional love for God and towards His work, in obedience, and love for mankind, not in abundance, but in contentment.

Noah Dearborn gave out his proceeds from carpentry work, lived in a wooden house, and frequently chose to work and distribute meals to his community without charges, what a life of Christ exemplified. Indeed, God will choose his home if He must visit the Earth.

How did you prepare your home last year? Was God pleased to stay when He came? Like, Zacchaeus, did He leave a message saying, “Today salvation has come to this house…”? I have no doubt that no matter how bad we did, God’s love gives us a chance and if we did better, we know we can do much better for God. As we begin this year, it is my prayer that God opens our minds to know that the things that we have and hold dear to our hearts are just borrowed and not ours at all; and that God should only let us use them for His work and to brighten the lives of others; for in simplicity of life lies the greatness of God’s Love. Shalom!
